1. Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) Test
The Fasting Blood Sugar test measures the amount of glucose in your bloodstream at a single point in time, specifically after a period of fasting for at least 8 to 12 hours. This test is highly sensitive to immediate dietary and metabolic states. A result below 100 mg/dL is considered normal, while levels between 100 to 125 mg/dL indicate prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher on two separate tests confirms a diabetes diagnosis.
2. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) Test
Unlike the fasting glucose test, the HbA1c test measures the percentage of blood sugar attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells. Because red blood cells live for approximately 3 months, this test provides an average of your blood glucose levels over the past 90 days. It does not require fasting and is not affected by short-term changes in diet, exercise, or stress. An HbA1c level below 5.7% is normal, 5.7% to 6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher indicates diabetes.
